Restore the relay order

Puzzle 1 · Ordering and deduction

Four relays must transmit in four slots, from first to last. Use each relay exactly once. The cards below are listed alphabetically, not in transmission order.

All three rules must be true:

  1. Moon transmits immediately before Pine, with no relay between them.
  2. Kite transmits sometime after Pine.
  3. Wave transmits sometime before Moon.

Your answer: Name all four relays in transmission order, from first to last.

Treat Moon and Pine as a two-card block. One named relay must go before that block, and another must go after it.

Reveal the solution to puzzle 1

Wave → Moon → Pine → Kite.

Wave must come before Moon, Moon must be immediately before Pine, and Kite must come after Pine. These rules place all four relays, so there is only one possible order.

Read the radio message

Puzzle 2 · Sorting and decoding

The station received five pulses out of order. Each pulse points to one letter in the grid. Put the pulses in pulse-number order, 1 through 5, then read their letters to find a five-letter direction.

For every pulse, use the row number first, then the column number. For example, row 1, column 1 contains A. There are no extra steps or hidden letters.

The received list is scrambled. Begin with the row labelled pulse 1.

Your answer: What five-letter direction do the pulses spell?

Pulse 1 points to row 3, column 2: N. Find pulse 2 next, even though it appears earlier in the received list.

NORTH.

In pulse-number order: 1 → row 3, column 2 → N; 2 → row 4, column 1 → O; 3 → row 1, column 2 → R; 4 → row 1, column 4 → T; 5 → row 2, column 1 → H.
